Autoportraits 1965/1-∞, Roman Opalka
(Part of Catherine Millet’s theme: (Auto)biography)

This book is a true "book - work of art". It presents in a spectacular and totally innovative way a selection of self-portraits by one of the most important artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Roman Opalka summarized his approach as follows: "I inscribe the elementary numerical progression from 1 to infinity on canvases of the same size. Then, after each work session, since 1965, he always photographed himself according to the same ritual: white shirt, neutral gaze, frontal face.

It is these self-portraits that the book reproduces at the size of the original works. 1965/1-∞ Self-portraits unfolds Opalka's definition of time in the form of accordions, and offers the reader a unique art object, a magnificent witness to a radical work.
