I spent a whole day walking among these terrils, each in its own state of change. The one I photographed was a pioneer hill — hawthorn, lichens, rosehips pushing through the bare coal soil. My first visit was a winter Sunday, at the end of the day, when the air was chilly and the sunset filled the sky with a quiet nostalgia. On the slope, the ground lay naked, worn down by footsteps, while below stretched a forest. Behind, the remains of the fosse still stood, an echo of industry. And from a distance, the size of these terrils compared to us revealed a strange truth: how small we are, facing what we ourselves have built and left behind. The air carried a metallic, industrial breath, cut by the fragile sweetness of hawthorn and sage.
