Cendre de Cuivre, Hideyuki Ishibashi x Maison Tempsens

This hill, once seen by Émile Zola for Germinal, still breathes with fire. When I visited in late autumn, the ground was damp and soft, carrying the smell of earth after rain. Half the slope was covered with ferns turned reddish brown, glowing like copper in the fading light, their dry fronds releasing a scent close to seaweed. The other half was still active — soil red, hot, and bare, plants burned away by the heat rising from within. Around its base stretched the city — car shops, fast food, houses — a daily life encircling a mountain that seemed silent, yet burned invisibly from inside. At sunset, the copper-colored ferns caught fire in the light, and I felt the fragile beauty of a place suspended between life and ruin.

Inspired by the mining landscape of Terril 162, Fosse Renard, Denain.
